Watch out for the Sesquicentennial!!!

Towns County's sesquicentennial is fast approaching. That's right, Towns County will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2006. Founded in 1856 from Union and Rabun counties, Towns County was named in honor of Governor George Washington Towns. Many of today's citizens fondly remember the 1956 centennial when the County came together as never before to celebrate the occasion. Organized by County Agent and Mrs. E. N. Nicholson, the communities entered floats into a parade, women donned long dresses and bonnets, men sprouted whiskers, and dignitaries from far and near, including Georgia's Gov. Marvin Griffin, came to join in the festivities. Representing Gov. Towns' family was his only surviving granddaughter, Mrs. Anna Walker Terrell, who fell in love with the area and moved here upon retirement.

It is in that spirit that the Towns County Historical Society invites you to join in preparing for our 150th anniversary. We have formed a committee in cooperation with the Towns County Chamber of Commerce to plan exciting events for a year-long celebration. To begin, we are sponsoring a contest for a seal and log to be used throughout the year.

We invite you to join our historical society and participate in upcoming activities in a large variety of events that will involve all Towns County citizens, families, and organizations. We encourage you, your church, and your community to take part in planning for a successful anniversary celebration.
